Women Liberal Democrats

Campaigning for Women inside and outside the Liberal Democrats

Women Liberal Democrats began in 1887 as the Women's Liberal Federation. We are a membership organisation open to all Party members, both women and men. Our Constitution pledges us to eliminate all inequality based upon gender.

We currently have three events planned for Spring/Summer 2008 - the WLD Annual Dinner, a Conference/Training event in Bath and a Garden Party. Click on the 'Forthcoming Events' link on the left-hand side of the page for details.

Patsy Calton Award

Sun 20th Apr 2008

Nominate a woman in your constituency for the Patsy Calton Award! In May 2005 when we won 62 parliamentary seats, 10 were held by women. Still a very poor proportion but progress had been made. Sadly on 29th May 2005 Patsy died. Patsy's record of achievement is an inspiration to us all and we hope that by introducing these annual awards for a female local activist, Councillor or MP/AM/MSP/MEP, that we can not only celebrate achievements by women but also encourage more women to participate in political processes at all levels. Email women@libdems.org.uk for a nomination form - DO IT NOW!

WLD speak out against Labour tax changes

Thu 17th Apr 2008

Many WLD members are very angry about the loss of the 10p tax band, in which there were many more women than men. Our President, Lorely Burt MP, says: 'Women already, on average, receive a much lower income then men. In 2004 for every £1 on average earned by men, women got just 54p. The abolition of the 10p tax rate has made things even worse for women already on low pay and women pensioners who cannot or are not prepared to claim pension credit.' Cllr Dr Miranda Whitehead, Vice Chair of WLD, has written to Nick Clegg on the issue. Vera Head, Liberal Democrat Councillor and WLD Treasurer, has spoken of the effect on pensioners like her, and other members are also contributing their views. WLD hopes that all our members will make their feelings known about this further erosion of the financial position of women. Please read the contributions below and then write to your MP, of whatever party, and tell them what you think.

WLD at Liverpool

Tue 11th Mar 2008

WLD members had an enjoyable and inspiring weekend in Liverpool. Our Fringe meeting 'This is International Women's Day!' was a great success, focussing mainly on the positive aspects of women's achievements in Britain and across the world. Read a full report at: www.wld.org.uk/pages/Liverpool2008.html Our stall attracted lots of visitors and our 'Find a Baroness' fundraising draw, with instant winnings in the form of Easter eggs, was a big hit. Several new members joined at the Conference, and we welcome them to WLD.

Quotes of the Week

"Liberalism in Britain has lost a great champion, the Liberal Democrats, a great advocate and our public life, a great servant."

Lord Paddy Ashdown

In memory of Lord Richard Holme, who died on 5 May

"If the Tories want to claim that they are going to cut corporation tax, they have to come clean about how they are going to pay for it. Cutting the main rate of corporation tax to 25% will cost more than £5bn a year. If David Cameron is to have a hope of sounding credible he must state clearly where the money will come from. Otherwise this will be seen as yet another unfunded tax cut."
